Announcements for May, 2017

AFSCME Sub-chapter 161

Dear member:

The AFSCME Retirees will meet at the Wildwood Tavern in Niles on Wednesday, May 17th. The meeting will begin at 11:30AM. Our speaker will be Dr. Laura Chamberlain of Clean Count Cook County. I’ve invited her so that she can tell us about her organization’s work to make local elections more representative of the will of citizens like us.

Mary Bennett and I are involved in a rally and march to Springfield that starts at noon this Monday, May 15th from the Thompson Center. It’s sponsored by Fair Economy Illinois and is called March to Springfield For a People and Planet First Budget. Jane Addams Senior Caucus is participating. Al Klinger, a 92 year old WW II vet is walking the 200 miles over 14 days. Go to this website for details-http://www.marchtospringfield.org.

Here’s a chance for each of us to raise our voices to pressure legislators to pass a state budget. Find a way to get involved. I have already e-mailed AFSCME Retiree sub-chapter presidents whose towns are close to route of march.

Sincerely,

Charlie Hogan,
President

Dear member:

The AFSCME Retirees will meet at the Wildwood Tavern in Niles on Wednesday, April 19th, at 11:30AM. The restaurant is on the corner of Touhy & Caldwell Avenues in Niles. Our speaker will be Ms. Denise Corkery, a spokeswoman for the Sierra Club. I’ve invited her so that she can tell you about her organization and the environmental challenges we face in the mid-west and Great Lakes region. I will have news from the 1st quarter meeting of Council 31 Retiree Officers conference that met on March 30-31 in Springfield. Mark you calendars to attend this meeting. There will be information and handouts to take home. Watch our blogsite for places to find the materials if you are unable to attend.

To be perfectly clear, nationally and in Illinois- we are in crisis.

Let me close on this hopeful note. You are among friends who have seen opportunity in this crisis and have been organizing a resistance. So come to the meeting and learn more about it and the role you will play.

Sincerely,

Charlie Hogan,
President

Announcements for January, 2017

13 January 2017:

AFSCME Sub-chapter 161

Dear member:

The AFSCME Retirees will meet at the Wildwood Tavern in Niles on Wednesday, 18 January 2017. Meeting begins at 11:30AM. The restaurant is located at Caldwell and Touhy Avenues in Niles.

I have invited Ms. Ana Marin, of Jane Addams Senior Caucus to tell us what they will be doing to fight the attacks on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the ACA, and our pensions. This weekend, I will be attending the AFSCME Council 31 Political Conference. I will update you with information from Council 31 at this meeting

Jane Addams SC is a highly effective grass roots senior organization. We can work with them, learning community organizing methods, to defeat this attack on ourselves and our families.

The election is past and it is time to focus on the work we must do.

Sincerely,

Charlie Hogan,
President

AFSCME Sub-chapter 161

Dear member:

The AFSCME Retirees will meet at the Wildwood Tavern on Wednesday, December 14th. The Wildwood Tavern is at 6480 W. Touhy, Niles, IL (the NE corner of Caldwell and Touhy). This is a week earlier than our usual meeting because of the approaching Holidays.

I will have news from the 4th quarter meeting of Council 31 Retiree Officers conference that will meet December 8 & 9 in Springfield. Because of the election and the ILB’s decision on impasse, I’m going to this conference in order to bring back information on what we have to do now as a sub-Chapter.

Since this is the Holiday session, I’m planning to bring items for a grab bag. Wrapped or unwrapped, we’ll put them on a table for inspection. So, if you found a item from last Christmas. Or if you want to spend $10.00, everyone bring a gift.

Let’s have some cheer and sing songs

Sincerely,

Charlie Hogan
President

Subject: We need a little NO TPP help this Monday, Oct 3rd, 10:15am at the: Duckworth / Kirk Debate at the Tribune Tower, Chicago – please reply if you can attend
To:

Hi all – I am having a hard time gathering up folks from the Kirk / Durbin No TPP team to come to this short action on Monday, Oct 3rd, 10:15 – 11:15am, at the Tribune Tower – Can anyone help us out?

Kirk and Duckworth are sparing off in front of the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune on
Mon. Oct 3rd at 11 am – there are no seats inside.

Shall we go down at 10:15a to welcome Kirk with No TPP signs?

We can stand in front of the 2 entrances, Michigan Ave and Cityfront Plaza with signs.

Can anyone come?
Does anyone else have a bull horn? – I have one but we need a second.
I will put up a FB event if I get a core group going – please let me know asap – thanks.
