The next AFSCME Retirees Subchapter 161 Member Meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 17. The meeting will occur at Sweet Basil Cafe, 5203 Old Orchard Road, Skokie, IL 60077. Our guest speaker will be Robin Rue Simmons. She is the Founder and Executive Director of FirstRepair, a not-for-profit organization that informs local reparations, nationally. She serves as the chairperson of the City of Evanston’s Reparations Committee. Rue Simmons is the former 5th Ward Alderman for the City of Evanston, IL, where she led, in collaboration with others, the passage of the nation’s first municipally-funded reparations legislation for Black residents, which began disbursements in January 2022.

The next AFSCME Retirees Subchapter 161 Membership Meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 19. The meeting will be open to all AFSCME Illinois Retiree Chapter 31 members in the area and their spouses. The meeting will occur at Sweet Basil Cafe, 5203 Old Orchard Road, Skokie, IL 60077. The meeting will include an election to fill one Trusteeship position for a three-year term. An election slate will be prepared by the Election Chairman and announced at the meeting. Other nominations for the position may be made by email to afscmeretirees161@gmail.com, by leaving a phone message on our Voice Mail (224-366-7339), or at the meeting.

The meeting will be visited by Maria Britton-Sipe, retiree coordinator for AFSCME Illinois Retiree Chapter 31.  She will be discussing the status of pensions, and State/Federal legislative issues.

By vote of the members at the February meeting, we have arranged for a docent guided tour at the Illinois Holocaust Museum, 9603 Woods Drive, Skokie, IL 60077. The tour will focus on the current exhibit at the museum: The Negro Motorist Green Book. Members and their guests shoud meet at the basement of the Museum 11:30 to11:45 am before the tour starts at Noon. The tour will be 45 minutes. Our Members Meeting for March with box lunches will be held after the tour. Walkers and wheelchairs can be reserved in advance. Members who wish to attend should call our Voicemail (224-366-7339) and leave a message for a callback so that we may get more information for the Museum.

Our guest speaker will be Toni Gilpin. Dr. Gilpin is a labor historian and activist. She is the author of the book The Long Deep Grudge: A Story of Big Capital, Radical Labor, and Class War in the American Heartland. This book details the long conflict between International Harvester and Farm Equipment Workers union, one of the unions deemed Communist by the CIO, and expelled in 1949.

Guest Speakers Cathleen Jensen  and Bill Bianchi from the Illinois Single Payer Coalition will be speaking about the movement for Universal Single Payer Health Care.  

Guest speakers Chris Shuttleworth and Fran Tobin from the Alliance for Community Services will give updates on Chicago City College Campaign for an  elected Board of Trustees and an Alliance virtual fundraiser.
