Announcements for August, 2017

10 August 2017

AFSCME Sub-chapter 161

Dear member:

The AFSCME Retirees will meet at the Wildwood Tavern in Niles on Wednesday, August 16th. The meeting will begin at 11:30AM. Our business will center around efforts to build sub-chapter membership and greater member participation. The times and the current situations in Springfield and in Washington will continue to affect us. We will need the tools, the training, as well as confidence in one another to meet any challenge.

I will have news on the work of our retiree volunteers to connect with our non-attending members. Many of them want to be part of phone tree and email efforts to pressure and support legislators who will represent us. Legislators who will speak to issues of how to fund Medicaid and senior services like meal on wheels.

Citizens United opened the political process to the influence of large amounts of “Dark” or anonymous money in our political process from primaries to legislator votes on bills that will affect us and our families. To check this threat, we have to build an opposing source of power.

We are fortunate as a sub-chapter to have a history of activism past and current. We have developed political skills individually and as a group. Many of us have continued to volunteer with our Council 31 as well as community organizations. During this meeting, we need to review what we know and consider together how to apply it in the months ahead.

Our strength can only grow through member participation. We need your attendance at this and future meeting.

Charles Hogan,
President

Announcements for June, 2017

14 June 2017

AFSCME Sub-chapter 161

Dear Member:

The AFSCME Retirees will meet at the Wildwood Tavern in Niles on Wednesday, June 21st. The meeting will begin at 11:30AM. Our speaker is our Council 31 Retiree Coordinator, Ms. Kate Jamruk.

Kate will have news of the challenges we are facing in Springfield and in Washington. If you are a state or state university retiree and are having any problems with the switch to the new health insurance provider, call or e-mail me first. I want you to have your information organized before Kate arrives. Kate and Martha Merrill, Council’s benefits specialist, are working together to smooth the transition.

This week, call your senators, Durbin and Duckworth, and tell them to oppose the closed door AHCA senate version. We don’t want a repeat of what the house Republicans did.

Sincerely,

Charlie Hogan, President

Announcements for May, 2017

11 May 2017

AFSCME Sub-chapter 161

Dear member:

The AFSCME Retirees will meet at the Wildwood Tavern in Niles on Wednesday, May 17th. The meeting will begin at 11:30AM. Our speaker will be Dr. Laura Chamberlain of Clean Count Cook County. I’ve invited her so that she can tell us about her organization’s work to make local elections more representative of the will of citizens like us.

Mary Bennett and I are involved in a rally and march to Springfield that starts at noon this Monday, May 15th from the Thompson Center. It’s sponsored by Fair Economy Illinois and is called March to Springfield For a People and Planet First Budget. Jane Addams Senior Caucus is participating. Al Klinger, a 92 year old WW II vet is walking the 200 miles over 14 days. Go to this website for details-http://www.marchtospringfield.org.

Here’s a chance for each of us to raise our voices to pressure legislators to pass a state budget. Find a way to get involved. I have already e-mailed AFSCME Retiree sub-chapter presidents whose towns are close to route of march.

Sincerely,

Charlie Hogan,
President

Announcements for April, 2017

12 April 2017

AFSCME Sub-chapter 161

Dear member:

The AFSCME Retirees will meet at the Wildwood Tavern in Niles on Wednesday, April 19th, at 11:30AM. The restaurant is on the corner of Touhy & Caldwell Avenues in Niles. Our speaker will be Ms. Denise Corkery, a spokeswoman for the Sierra Club. I’ve invited her so that she can tell you about her organization and the environmental challenges we face in the mid-west and Great Lakes region. I will have news from the 1st quarter meeting of Council 31 Retiree Officers conference that met on March 30-31 in Springfield. Mark you calendars to attend this meeting. There will be information and handouts to take home. Watch our blogsite for places to find the materials if you are unable to attend.

To be perfectly clear, nationally and in Illinois- we are in crisis.

Let me close on this hopeful note. You are among friends who have seen opportunity in this crisis and have been organizing a resistance. So come to the meeting and learn more about it and the role you will play.

Sincerely,

Charlie Hogan,
President
